Sungai Perigi

This is popular picnic spot for visitors, including residents of Yan Kechil, Guar Chempedak and Dulang Kechil. Part of its appeal lies in the fact that it is easily accessible to cars. With a drop of more than 100 metres, the lower falls are certainly an eye-catching sight, visible even from the main road several kilometres away! There is another fall much higher up which is inaccessible but equally breathtaking when viewed from a far.

Kampung Perangin

About 3.4 kilometres from Sik town, along the road to Alor Star is a very popular tourist spot. This is a nature park equipped with changing rooms, toilets, shelters and walkways. But the main attraction is the waterfall and artificial pool ideal for swimming and bathing. The falls cascade down several levels in a display of white froth and crystal-clear water.

Lata Bukit Hijau

To reach this site, the visitor will have to negotiate a confusing network of estate roads. The 4-kilometre journey is best travelled with 4-wheel drive vehicles. Passing through cocoa plantations and rubber estates, visitors will enter the Gunung Inas Forest Reserve, just 10 kilometres from Malau town. The waterfalls and rapids have natural pools of crystal-clear mountain-spring water that are both inviting and invigorating!

Lata Assam Jawa

Commonly called Lata Sungai Pegang by local residents, Lata Assam Jawa is a popular and well-known scenic spot. Located within the Telui Forest Reserve near Kampung Assam Jawa, about 19 kilometres from Baling, the falls cascade down in several steps with fall feights of between 1 and 6 metres. Baling itself is a popular stopover for those travelling on the East-West Highway, and the waterfalls are directly accessible from the Highway by road.

Lata Mengkuang

Just beside the Baling-Sik main road is the lower stage of the Lata Mengkuang, a series of little falls and rapids. The lesser known upper stage is more interesting with many waterfalls, each having its own particular attraction. Concrete steps have been provided all the way up to the waterfalls, with an open area at the top.

Bukit Perak

This waterfall nestles among hills of primary tropical rainforest, which provides a spectacular backdrop. The falls itself is rather smaller, with a shallow stream suitable for wading or paddling.

Sungai Charok Wang Falls

These falls are located within a Nature Forest Reserve that has been developed and maintained by the Forestry Department. The facilities available include a children's playground, toilets, changing room, foodstalls and walkways. It is a well-patronised picnic spot, packed with weenkend visitors. The waterfalls themselves are best appreciated during the rainy season when the whole area takes on a fresh and invigorating atmmosphere.

Punchak Janing

The Punchak Janing Waterfalls are located about 16 kilometres from Kuala Nerang on a small plateau surrounded by jungle-covered hills. There are several falls and rapids, with natural pools for bathing and wading. A water-slide that has been installed in one of the pools has proved especially popular with local visitors.

Lubuk Semilang

Famous for its natural loveliness, the falls are formed by Sungai Korok as it tumble down over steep ang rocky outcroups on Langkawi Island. Located just west of the Gunung Raya mountain range, this spot is reached fairly and easily by car via 1.3 kilometre access track.

There are two main stage; the doenstream stage with many rapids and upstream stage with lovely small waterfall and large boulders.

Temurun Falls

This is a spectacular torrent cascading down a full 150 metres amidst sheer forested hill-slopes. It is impressive seen in its entirety as a towering wall of gushing water cleaving the mountainside. A lovely and memorable natural wonder only recently discovered, it is rapidly gaining popularity for its beautiful vista and unspoilt freshness. Visitors to Langkawi should not miss this.

Telaga Tujuh

Telaga Tujuh or Seven Pools refer to the seven natural pools above the fall. Already well-known this waterfall is spectacular, with one stage falling a sheer 25 metres. The pools are ideal for a cool dip. Located on the island of Langkawi, the fall is 34 kilometres from Kuah and can be reach directly by car.

Durian Perangin

One of the most beautiful waterfalls in Kedah, on the legendary island of Pulau Langkawi, Durian Perangin consists of five stages each with its own special appeal. The first fall, for instance, is a fast-flowing rapids with a natural pool for swimming while the third fall is a breathtaking 30-metre drop ending in a large pool for swimming ang bathing, with some parts as deep as 2 metres.

Located about 17 kilometres from Kuah, the administrative centre of Langkawi, this waterfall can be reach by a 2.5 kilometre track from Kuah-Tanjung Rhu road either on foot or by jeep.

Waterfalls always occur together with rocks. One never sees a waterfall going over an earth cliff. water can erode soil in a very short time, but takes millions of years to wear down rocks. Signs of it can nevertheless be seen in the surfaces of rocks, polished smooth by the continous flow of water.

Some waterfalls may also be found in limestone, which is a sedimentary rock. This is not common in Malaysia. The local climate and conditions have caused very rapid erosion leaving few limestone surfaces around to present sufficient drainage for a sustainable stream. Thus Malaysian limestone normally has waterfalls during or after rainstorms, occuring both outside and inside the limestone, the latter being found in caves.
